Entering My Beer Into Competition

Question

If I want to enter a homebrew into a competition like a State/county fair or any other, does the brew have to be my own recipe? Can it be from a “kit”? Or does it have to be completely made up on my own?

Answer

I have talked to people that have entered competitions and all the judges care about is what style of beer you have attempted to make so they can base their scoring on that. I have even read testimonials in brew supply catalogs that say something like “our kit won this competition”, etc.

Remember, a recipe is a recipe, but executing it is a different story. You should enter competitions for the feedback on your skills and of course the glory if you brew a great batch.
