Sterilizing New Brew Equipment

Question:

I’m a new to home brewing I bought a homebrew starter kit last week.

The question I have is, even though I have not brewed beer before, do I still need to sterilize my bucket and keg before brewing? and if so what do I use?

Answer:

There are a lot of products out on the market for sterilizing your equip. Star San is an excellent product along with idophor, it can be used without a rinse.

You can also use a water/bleach solution. Mix about 3 ounces of bleach to 5 gallons of cold water. Let it set for about 20 minutes and then rinse well.

You should sanitize everything before starting any brew.
